1) Root Canal Treatment

When the inside core of the tooth has gone bad due to decay, for example, the tooth can be saved safely by removing the inside core called the "dental pulp."

HERE IS HOW YOUR TOOTH IS SAVED THROUGH ROOT CANAL TREATMENT:
After you have been anesthetized with local anesthesia, a small opening is made in the top of your tooth. At this point, the pulp and nerves are removed from the inside of your tooth. The root canals are cleaned and shaped. The root portion of the tooth is sealed and filled with a sterile material called "guttapercha". Sometimes, a tooth is too infected to seal the canals at the first appointment and a special medication is placed in your tooth for about a week at which point you will need to return to have the treatment completed. After either procedure, a temporary filling material will be placed in the access opening. After completion of your root canal you should call your general dentist for a final restoration (usually a crown) as soon as possible.

2) Root Canal Re-treatment

In an unusual situation, a root canal treatment may need to be re-done. This is called a retreatment. There are several reasons this may happen to you. It could be because your crown is leaking into the inside of your tooth, you may have failed to get a permanent restoration, or your immune system may not have cleared up all of the infection during your previous root canal treatment. Retreatments are done in two visits. First, the old root canal filling material inside of the roots must first be removed, and special medications placed inside of the tooth to promote healing. This needs to sit inside of your tooth for about a week at which time you will return to the office to have the canals of your tooth re-sealed with the gutta percha. Once this is completed, you must return to your general dentist within two weeks for a permanent restoration. If your crown does not need to be replaced, you will need a filling inside of the crown.

3) Non-vital Bleaching

Some people experience a graying of a tooth that has either been injured or had a root canal. You can have the tooth bleached internally so it will match the color of your others. The filling material will be removed from the back of the tooth and over a series of approximately 3 appointments, she will place a special bleaching material inside of your tooth. Once your tooth color matches that of your other teeth, you can return to your general dentist for a permanent filling. What a wonderful way to keep your smile looking healthy!

4) Endodontic Surgery

Some patients need a surgical procedure called Apicoectomy. It involves an area at the tip of the root. A small incision in the gum tissue will be made resulting in exposing the end of the root. The infected area of the root and it's surroundings are then removed. A filling is placed inside of the root end and a few small sutures are placed. After a week, you will need to return to Davis Endodontics to have your sutures removed and she will periodically check your healing progress thereafter.
